How To Lose Cellulite

Cellulite is one of the more pesky and anxiety-producing issues we have to deal with when it comes to body image.  It's one that can cause shame and make you hide your body from the world.  Read on for info on what causes cellulite, how to lose cellulite, and the best exercises for cellulite!

So What Causes Cellulite, Anyway?

Cellulite is lumps of fat that are constricted by tough, inflexible collegen fibers pulled tight to the muscle beneath the fat.

Some causes of cellulite are:

  • Muscle atrophy
  • Increased total body fat
  • Dehydration
  • Fluid retention (lots of salt in diet does not help)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Sitting all day (i.e., constricted blood flow to thighs)
  • Yo-yo dieting
  • Impurities and toxins in blood and liver

How To Lose Cellulite

There are a few solid ways to attack cellulite.  Lifestyle is the most important factor in smoothing out your thighs and stomach when it comes to those unsightly lumps.  The most unlikely ways to "cure" cellulite are with lasers, creams, and brushes!  The results of these types of cellulite treatments are temporary at best and usually just have unsatisfactory results and are ineffective.

To lose cellulite, diet and exercise are the mainstays!  The goal is always going to be fat reduction, efficient fat metabolism, and muscle building and toning.

  1. Diet:  Follow a clean protein-rich, low-carb, very low-sugar and
    healthy-fat diet.  


    Clean, Protein-Rich
    Super high protein diets can have an effect of making your blood a bit dirty. Eating a lot of meat, especially red meat, can result in high levels of uric acid in your system, which can weigh you down and make your liver "dirty". The impurities in the blood that the liver must constantly process can make it more difficult for the liver to metabolize fat.  Fat will instead be stored in the fat zone areas (thighs and stomach) instead of used efficiently. Organic white meat in small amounts (3-4 ounces per day) is a good way to keep your diet protein-rich, and this, in addition to cutting way down on refined carbohydrates, is when you'll start to see cellulite reduction and your waistline shrink.

    Low-Carb, Very Low-Sugar
    We've all heard it before, but it's really true!  High-glycemic carbs, sugars, and sweeteners are terrible saboteurs when it comes to getting rid of cellulite!  These so-called "foods" are devoid of nutrition and high in calories, which will only turn to fat on your cellulite areas!  Seriously, the more you eat of anything with sugar high-glycemic carbs, the more cellulite you're going to see on your body, AND the harder it's going to be to get rid of.


    Examples of high-glycemic foods are bananas, yams, pears, cherries, white rice, white bread, cakes or muffins, bagels, cereals, tortillas, etc.  This stuff is like glue in your gut.  YUCK!  Healthier choices include modest amounts of high-fiber carbs like whole grains (quinoa, brown rice), a bran muffin, and fruits like apples, oranges, and most berries.

    Healthy Fats
    It's important to eat fat that feeds your body and turns into good cholesterol.  Some examples are flaxseed, primerose, and borage oils (EFAs), avocado, cold-pressed coconut oil, and raw nut butters.  Eating small quantities is important because fat has more calories per ounce than protein and carbs, but eating just enough will give you sustained energy and a healthy brain as a bonus.


    ALWAYS EAT ORGANIC!

  2. Cleansing

    Cleansing the liver and the gut of built-up toxins is helpful when trying to get rid of cellulite.  It is the liver's job to metabolize fat, but when it's constantly trying to neutralize toxins that come from an unhealthy and dead diet, medications, processed foods and even synthetic cosmetics, it can't focus on the fat.  So, fat accumulates and is stored in the thighs and stomach and arms--the main locations for cellulite!

    Cleansing toxins from the body via cleansing programs and through maintaining a healthy diet will help the liver burn the fat that's been lingering around for years and allow the gut to digest foods more thoroughly, which also helps the liver tremendously!

  3. Exercise

    This is the biggie!  Aerobic exercise is very important for reducing overall fat and making your cardiovascular system burn fat more efficiently, so this aspect of a fitness routine should not be overlooked when it comes to how to lose cellulite.

    However, muscle tone in the body is what forms a beautiful figure underneath the skin.  We all need some fat to stay healthy and have balanced hormones, but if there is no muscle to create a firmness under that skin and fat, the body will have a flimsy and squishy look, even if someone is thin.  Building muscle and toning the areas where cellulite has appeared over the years is going to be one of the biggest factors for how to lose cellulite!  Take heed!

Exercises for Cellulite

The best exercises for cellulite are those that make you sore!  There's no short-cut easy way around it.  The muscle has to build, and to build, it has to be worked thoroughly and regularly.  Below is a brief list of exercises for cellulite and a prescription (reps, sets, frequency) for each.  Regularly performing these exercises will have very good cellulite reduction effects on your trouble spots!  High reps is KEY!

For Thighs and Butt:

  1. SQUATS:  50 reps (complete squat), 2-3 sets, 4-5 days per week.
    Tip: Pausing after you squat, before you stand back up, is a great
    way to increase the work load.
  2. TABLE TOP LEG LIFTS:  25 slow reps, 2-3 sets, 3-4 days per week
  3. PELVIC THRUSTS:  30 slow reps, 2-3 sets, 3-4 days per week
  4. FAST KICKING IN POOL: For 5-8 minutes straight, 6 days per week
  5. EGG BEATER IN POOL:  For 5-8 minutes straight, 6 days per week

For Stomach:

  1. Any cardiovascular exercise done in fat-burning zone:  3-6 days per week (Ex: hiking, swimming, running, skiing, tennis, aerobics, elliptical machine, spinning, etc.)
  2. CORE EXERCISES:  6-7 days per week (see examples here)
  3. CRUNCHES/SIT-UPS:  25 reps, 4 sets, 5-7 days per week
